EU PS3 Delayed To March 2007

My wallet is singing Oh Happy Day even though I’m crying. Us Europeans are seriously being screwed over again. A 5 month delay when a worldwide release was promised, damn it!

Anyway, guess I’ll be spending my PS3 cash on Gears of War and DOAX2 now…

Guess what’s screwing us over: the fucking Blu-ray drive!

it seems so. i dont’get it though. why US!

Because we’re the least important market? it’s actually pure logic, but that doesn’t mean it sucks…
Why did we want Blu-ray in our PS3’s again?

well, bigger storage is future proof. Resistance alone is already 40 gig or something. would never fit on a HDDVD.

    but it sucks idd :/

You do know that that’s all bullshit about that 40 gig? If they had wanted, Bethesda (f.e.) could have fitted Oblivion on 7 DVD’s (remember those rumors?), but that’s what compression is for… Why is Resistance such a ‘big’ game? Just because there is no need to compress the files…

Of course games are going to get bigger in the years to come, but at this moment I’m pretty sure they could fit Resistance on one single DVD-disc. I mean, what company comes out and says “hey, look, we have a game that’s 40 gig in size!” (I honestly hope that this game doesn’t come out on PC then - the full install would be hell ;)). They are just doing this to make us feel better about the Blu-ray drive. It’s all just marketing.

And just think about it: if a launchgame is already 40 gig, does that mean that the games that come out in 2 years (no doubt bigger games) will have to be fitted on 2 blu-ray discs? :)

But enough about all this! I’m just sick and tired of Sony for the moment. And the funny thing is that Sony itself is sick and tired of Sony. The European division didn’t even know the delay was coming until yesterday…

well, it’s true that they can do it with compression. but why would u if u can fit it just like that? it’ll speed up certain things since decompressing takes time. so it’s less work for the developers, they don’t have to waste time optimizing the decompressing and the cpu isn’t wasted on the process either.

also, seeing how big games are getting and we’re reaching the limits of dvd, and the fact that hddvd isn’t that much bigger, we’ll be needing bigger storage sooner or later. it won’t take long before you see 360 games with multiple discs.

these 720p and 1080p games require much higher resolution, the next gen shows much higher res textures (just look at dead rising), sound quality for 7.1 surround etc requires more storage for sound files, etc etc. look at the size of game demos now and look at them 2 years ago. these things grow constantly, and with a bigger storage you’re just future proof for a longer time.

i dare to put money on it that MS will be releasing games in multiple dvd disc version and hddvd versions, so you don’t “have to” buy their hddvd drive.

i’m not really sick of sony. i still love what they are doing for the ps2, i’m re-enjoying the psp with their new releases and i really can’t wait to get my hands on the ps3. hell, i can’t be sick of ‘m , 99% of my equipment at home is sony :D

Tomonobu Itagaki: “Yes, it will have both Japanese and English voice tracks. As always, we don’t have enough space on own disc for what we want to do. But there will be both voice tracks.”

developers actually have to keep things out of the game because of the small size of dvd. in doax2 we’ll have both voice tracks, but in lots of games we don’t! but still he says he lacks the space to do more!

bigger storage is always better imo

yes, but give him blu-ray (or HD-DVD, whatever), and he still will need more space. It’s not that DOAX2 will be a bigger game than Saints Row or Oblivion…

I totally agree with you that DVD might become too small in the future and that more space = more freedom for designers, but I’m just warning you for Sony’s hype machine.

well, if we had blu ray in our ps2’s, we maybe would have had a jap soundtrack in yakuza. i don’t call that just hype but major improvement.

well, it seems resistance’s data IS compressed!

Yes it is true - we are currently using more than 20 gigs. And yes, we do compress our level data. The fact that we store so much on disc is actually not that surprising when you look at the numbers. Consider that even with compression, each of our “levels” (or loaded areas) has more than 300 megs of unique data. And keep in mind that we’re also streaming data during level playthroughs. It doesn’t take too much level data before you’ve gone past what can be stored on a dual-layer DVD. And between single player and multiplayer we have a lot of level data (over 40 different large loaded areas) - yes, more than will fit on a dual layer DVD.

that doesn’t sound good for the future of the xbox. or they better start using the inferior HDDVD discs for game storage (which they claim will never happen), or they use multiple discs or their games will look less good than ps3 quite soon …

“Also mentioned is the fact that all game movies are in more than one format, multiple full language tracks, and a fist full of extras. ” (PS3 Fanboy)
I think this explains a lot too :)

But anyway, Resistance will be a huge game, unlike a lot of other games. And I also believe that there will be some problems with storage for the Xbox 360, but not at this moment (maybe in three or more years - and even then: would it really be a problem if they’d put f.e. the multiplayer mode and the single player mode of a game on two separate discs?). Sony really wants people to think that storage is a huge problem, but at this moment it isn’t.

And yes, for Resistance they compressed some of their data too, but definitely not all of it (why should they, they have plenty of space).

Oh, and don’t think I’m against Blu-ray or something (after all, it still is a great invention, albeit a very expensive one compared to HD DVD). I’m just against marketing BS ;)

    i think u’re more of a marketing whore than u think :P just not sony’s PR ;)

i’m only looking at this from a technical point of view. as a developer, i can hardly say less storage is a good thing. that’s why blu-ray gets my vote. coz in the long run (and i wouldn’t dare to say dvd will last more than 2 years), size will matter.

just look at the exponential rate movie trailers and game demos have grown in size. our 10gig download limit has gone from “usably to the average internet subscriber” to “i’m paying each month for extra storage blocks” just because of these oversized downloads.

anyhoo, marketing or not, dvd9 is being used for more and more games on ps2. that’s low res textures, non-HD cutscenes and stereo sound. dvd5 doesn’t even cut it for some projects anymore. how’s dvd9 gonna last with high res textures, HD cutscenes and dolby digital 7.1?

i’m going in a loop here. lol. who cares anyway, u and i know we’ll both have all formats and consoles in 2007 anyway ;)

anyway: check the new Apple stuff (i don’t care about it, but i know you ;))
