Sony’s back

Every Extend Extra

If we forget about PS2 for a moment, which still has an amazing library of games with many great titles to come, people would claim Sony hasn’t got what it takes when it comes to handheld gaming and the next generation of consoles.

But having just received Ultimate Ghost n’ Goblins and Every Extend Extra, I have to disagree. The PSP sure has potential and these new batch of games (still waiting for Gitaroo Man Lives!) will make the PSP a nice choice for gamers as Xmas present.

Ultimate Ghost n’ Goblins is insane though. You can’t blink, you just can’t take a 1 second break. Monsters keep coming from all sides while you jump your way through the crazy but beautiful level design. It’s unforgiving and frustrating, but you keep coming back for more. You want to show that game who’s the boss ;). The jumping mechanic doesn’t help though. Once you jump in a direction, you’re off in that direction. No change possible, like you would in a Mario game. In short, it’s Mario platforming, with Ikaruga dodging and a handicap on your jumping ability. Loco, but fun :D Edge gave it 9/10. 1UP 4/10. I guess I agree with both.

I haven’t had much time with Every Extend Extra yet, but it’s your typical Q! Entertainment game. It has Rez and Lumines written all over it. Simply put, it’s just the free PC game with a new skin and music that reacts to your actions. A must for puzzle fans… I can only hope one day they’ll do a Geometry Wars remake too :D

Onto some bigger news! I really like my 360, but the lack of good games and Japanese dev support makes it a dust collector. Ridge Racer 6 is the last game I actually played on it. The DS, PS2 and PSP are getting the most love at the moment and Next-gen is amazing and all, but without the right games, without the support of the Japanese people and developers, no next-gen console will succeed in giving me what my PS2 and Gamecube ever gave me. I need my Final Fantasy games. I need JRPGS. I need games like Katamari, Ico, Killer 7, Rez, Xenosaga etc. I guess you see where this is going :P

Yes, I’ve done it. I’ve preordered a PS3. That doesn’t mean I’ll have it at launch with 100% certainty but still. Yes, it’ll be the first revisions and yes, it might be buggy, but lately firmware updates fix all so I couldn’t care less. That baby will hopefully be sitting next to my Sony tv before Christmas ;)

So actually you’re saying you want all the games you have right now but with slightly better graphics… :)
Because that’s what ‘next-gen’ is all about… (Xbox 360 included, although Microsoft announced a lot more new IP than Sony did)

You should have preordered a Wii dammit! :)

I’m not going to preoder a PS3. I just can’t afford it. I have to pay too much taxes and all… If Sony doesn’t send me one (and I doubt they will), I’ll probably have to wait until next year…

next gen isn’t just prettier graphics. those processors in the 360 and ps3 aren’t used for that at all, but for better AI, physics, etc. so many things can be improved in games, so many more models, better animation, smarter enemies, real-time object interaction, full 7.1 surround sound, etc

there’s many games on 360 the ps2 nor xbox would ever be able to pull off. that’s the point of next gen ;) developers can just go further, not just up the quality of graphics.

i would like more of the same franchises yes. or games by developers that made franchises i love (like the people of ico, or square, etc). i don’t need new IP, i need good IP ;)

btw, u didn’t put down 400 euros for just better graphics i hope? i presume u didn’t since the first months u played 360 on a regular tv. u wouldn’t even have noticed the 1st gen new graphics.

looking back at the ps2, i’m pretty sure the ps3 will be an unmissable piece of hardware. better save up! i want reviews of my games on your site this year! not next year ;) a bit professionalism plz :P

You can always sponsor my website? Or find me a sponsor? ;)
Problem is I just don’t have 600. Every three months (for the first three years) I have to cough up 500 euro in social taxes (and I don’t get that money back until 2009), and then there’s BTW, other taxes and other costs… (paying off my hdtv ;))

Of course I know there’s more to next-gen than just graphics, but for now I’m more excited about what the 360 has in store (Dead Rising, Gears of War, Forza 2, Saints Row, Viva Pinata, Crackdown, Blue Dragon, …) than the PS3 (a very weak launch lineup with almost only sequels). And of course the PS3 will eventually be a good console with some very good games, but at this moment I’m not really impressed by it.

tell me about. the stuff i see vanish from my salary and bonuses every year :( i’m only making our government rich, not myself.

I’m just getting it now since i’ll get it anyway at some point. Heavenly Sword and Resistance will keep me busy until real games are released (like DOA4 and RR6 kept me busy till Dead Rising ;)), and I’m curious bout Bluray anyway ;)

There’s not a single console that’s really impressing at launch. i got the DS at launch, the psp at launch and the 360 a few months after launch. at the time i bought them, none of the were jaw-dropping. but at least we were playing them ;)
