Portable Heaven

Ridge Racer

Yes, the lack of updates is still World of Warcraft’s fault. It’s quite a demanding game and is eating up all the time I have. Call it addicted, I call it… wait no. I AM addicted!

Too bad, I’ll learn to live with it.

Anyway, I’m a gadget whore, you all know that. But after buying the Nintendo DS I told myself NOT to buy the Sony PSP. What’s the point anyway, I have a PS2 and I never have the time to play when I’m not at home. So no, I didn’t buy the PSP…

My girlfriend did. For me, that is. I came back from work a week ago to find Elke with a PSP. She just bought it because she knew I loved those things, but wasn’t all that hyped about it herself. Until we bought Lumines of course.

The little console is amazing! The display is beautiful and the sound is incredible. Put on your headphones and boot WipeOut, and welcome to a completely different world. This machine has some great power and it really is just a PS2 in your pocket, although if you don’t have a big widescreen LCD hanging on your wall with a loud surround system, the PSP might just be better.

The only problem is the lack of great games. I already own everything worth owning (WipeOut Pure, Ridge Racer and Lumines) except Burnout Legends. So, there’s not really a lot to look forward to at the moment. But these few games already make worth the purchase. WipeOut was an all time favourite and suits the PSP like no other. Ridge Racer is great arcade action and ideal for that half hour de-stressing during lunch breaks. Lumines is a great puzzler with superb music and graphics, but I really suck at it.

But screw UMD movies. Although the quality is great, 20 Euro for a movie is way too much. I don’t even give that money to a DVD, let alone a PSP only version. I guess I’ll buy a 1Gig Memorystick and start converting some DVDs to the PSP format, since it is supposed to be easy. It has mp3 playing abilities too, but honestly, it’s too big for a music player. I’ll keep using my good ol’ iPod.

One thing that is amazing is the WiFi web browsing abilities. This browser renders pages beautifully and it’s actually not a pain to use, even though you have no keyboard and mouse. Also, games can use the WiFi to play wireless against other PSPs or even to connect to the Internet.

All by all, it’s a must-have for any game lover. And if you like gadgets, this must be the best all-in-one package you can get. Damn you Sony for making this sexy piece of hardware.

What about loading times? Do you have any dead pixels?

I’m totally not convinced yet, but I’ll probably buy one anyway, just to have it. The more systems I have, the more systems I can write reviews for ;)

yes i got dead pixels :( but they’re unnoticable if the screen doesn’t go black. so they don’t really bug me.

loading times depend on the game. i saw virtua tennis and it even stops and reads from the disc when scoring a point, breaking the action.

as for other games, nothing that really bugs me. You load before a level, that’s it. Hasn’t bothered me yet. (except for games who like million menus before u enter the game. for crying out loud, why!#$#@)
